I ended up ordering five knives off of Amazon, the most expensive was $27. They were (in order of appearance in above photo):
- MTech MT-20-35; $8
- Winchester with Burl Wood handle; $20
- Elk Ridge Er-087; $17
- Morakniv Companion; $11
- Schrade Frontier; $27
All of the knives came pre-sharpened and had a pretty good edge to them. The finish on both the Winchester and Elk Ridge, was pretty rough. The transition on the handle from one material to the next left a lot to be desired -- like it wasn't sanded and polished, not nearly enough.
The two that really stood out to me was the Schrade and the Morakniv.
For $11.38 (and free shipping) the Morakniv might be the best bargain out there. The knife comes in both stainless and carbon steel. I ordered the carbon version. Really sharp, very light, this is a great knife that deserves a place on your belt. And at $11, it's a good knife to stash in the car, give as a gift or otherwise.
The Schrade Frontier is beefy. Quarter inch thick steel blade that's been powder coated to prevent rusting. This guy's heavier, but feels really substantial in the hand like a Rambo knife without looking like one. What's also nice about this one is that it came with a steel to hone it as well as a fire starter. Additionally, the sheath has a little pocket that's the perfect size for my Gerber multitool.
Conclusion: I'm keeping both the Schrade and the Morakniv. The Morakniv is going in the car or emergency kit and I'll wear the Schrade with Gerber multitool tucked away.
